A core skill of a human factors professional is writing. In most cases it must cater to a range of audiences, with different levels human factors knowledge, within a prescribed scope and format, all within a ridiculous timeframe! In the transport industry, this can be further complicated with lots of technical jargon, endless acronyms and complex systems that you also need to learn (and then articulate!)

When we write well, it makes a positive impact to projects and our professional reputation. When we don’t write well, it can make it difficult for stakeholders to see the value we add as a human factors person.

This short session will cover some key lessons on professional writing for internal reports and publications in the transport industry, so that your next deliverable really hits it out of the park!

Presenter: Deborah Loats, Transport Safety Investigator, ATSB

Deborah has been working in the field of human factors since 2017. She started as a researcher, built her knowledge as an advisor, and now works as an investigator for the Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB).

She has worked in defence, rail, aviation and air traffic control transport sectors covering a range of human factors topics. Recently she was awarded the Vice-Chancellor’s List for Academic Excellence Award for finishing in the top two per cent of RMIT higher education students in 2023.
