HFESA PD – Neurodiverse Safe Work – More than just noise-cancelling headphones
Neurodiverse Safe Work – More than just noise-cancelling headphones with speaker Catherine Lee.
“Neurodiverse Safe Work – More than just noise-cancelling headphones” – Why traditional
Diversity, equity, and inclusion and Disability discrimination strategies may not adequately
provide for neurodivergent workers, and why Human Factors and an OHS approach offers
a more complete solution.
In this session Catherine will provide a guided tour through the landscape of
neurodiversity in employment, challenging unconscious bias and stereotypes with
evidence-based facts and up to the minute research about what neurodiversity is, what it
isn’t , how it impacts health, why it’s important to understand in employment and
exposes the gaps in traditional disability employment practices. She explains the concept
of the Vicious Cycle of Non Disclosure and uses a case study drawn from her professional
experience to demonstrate how traditional employment practices can cause harm to
neurodivergent workers and how understanding the role the workers neurodivergence
played in the scenario and providing a more inclusive approach a good outcome was
achieved both for the worker and employer.
