2nd International Conference on Applied Ergonomics
AE International 2008
2nd International Conference on Applied Ergonomics
www.AEI2008.org
Jointly with
12th International Conference on Human Aspects of Advanced Manufacturing (HAAMAHA)
14 -17 July 2008
Caesars Palace • Las Vegas, Nevada USA
Under the auspices of 7 distinguished international boards of 167 members from 29 countries
Objective and Areas of Interest
You are cordially invited to participate in AE International 2008 and the affiliated HAAMAHA conference which are jointly held under one management and one registration. The conference objective is to provide an international forum for the dissemination and exchange of scientific information on theoretical, generic, and applied areas of ergonomics, including, physical ergonomics, cognitive ergonomics, social and organizational ergonomics, ergonomics modeling and usability evaluation, healthcare and special populations, safety and ergonomics in manufacturing. This will be accomplished through the following six modes of communication: keynote presentation, parallel sessions, demonstration and poster sessions, tutorials, exhibitions and meetings of special interest groups. The four-day conference will start with tutorials. The tutorials will be held on July 14, 2008. Tutorials will be offered (both half-day and full-day) at introductory, intermediate, and advanced levels covering the entire spectrum of the conference.
All submitted abstracts will be peer-reviewed by three independent referees from the international program boards. It is anticipated that a broad range of research and applied topics will be covered during the conference. Papers in the theoretical category should deal with models, concepts, and structures; papers in the generic category should present research results of broad applicability; and in the applied category should show how the demands of particular application areas shape the way generic research is translated into practical innovation.
Proposals for Participation
Parallel presentations. An abstract of about 800 words should be submitted through the web and should include a statement of the objective and significance of the proposed presentation, a description of methods, and a discussion of results.
Poster/demonstration sessions. This session has been especially designed to accommodate the presentation of late-breaking scientific and professional news, work in progress, work which can be more effectively presented via demonstration or when the author feels more comfortable presenting the material in written form or demonstrating it rather than by oral presentation. An abstract of 300 words should be submitted through the web and should include the essence of the planned presentation.
Special interest groups. The objective of these sessions is to bring together Conference participants to discuss a topic of common interest. An 800 word abstract should be submitted through the web and state the objective and significance of the session, potential participants (or how participants will be selected), format of session, and anticipated duration.
Tutorials. An abstract of 300 words should state the objective, content, target audience, a bio-sketch about the presenter(s) and A/V requirements. Indicate whether the proposed tutorial is for a half-day or full-day.
Please submit all abstracts through the conference web site: www.AEI2008.org
Please see the website for Summary of Submission Requirements & Deadlines.
All submissions should be done through the website: www.AEI2008.org
* Since frequently the intent of posters is to convey late-breaking scientific news and work in progress, they will be promptly peer reviewed as they are received.

Morning Session – Niki Ellis 9:30 – 12:30
Improving the quality of the work environment: Stress Buster – what really happened at Swan Care
Learning objectives:
- To understand current trends in the field of health and productivity
- Have an overview of the state of the evidence-base supporting such organisational-level interventions
- Know a methodology for assessing and improving the quality of the working environment (socio-organisational factors), consistent with the UK Health and Safety Executive stress management standards
- By working through a case study, gain a working knowledge of the Dos and Don’ts for implementation.
Workshop Overview
The evidence-base for developing organisational-level interventions for occupational stress to complement and balance existing individual-level interventions in workplaces is gaining pace. At the same time in Australia there is recognition of the need to increase the proportion of the health budget allocated to prevention. Workplaces are gaining recognition within health promotion as being important settings – not only because working populations are captive audiences, but also because the work of some employers on job control is a relevant experiment for community settings.
This workshop will begin with a brief overview of theory relevant to workplace socio-organisational factors and health, followed by an exploration of the principles and practice of conducting an intervention to assess and improve the quality of working environments through a case study in the aged care industry. The case study is that of Swan Care, featured on one of the episodes of Stress Buster recently shown on ABC television. Niki Ellis will take workshop participants behind the scenes.
Learning objectives
Many people use the word “stress” with only a vague idea of what they mean. This workshop aims to help you stop using the following terms:
- The fight or flight syndrome
- The general adaptation syndrome
- Risk management (as applied to stress)
- Effort-reward imbalance and other pseudo-objective concepts of stress
Instead you will learn to speak about stress in terms of emotional fatigue and personal meaning, and – through relating these ideas to your own experience – you will really know what you are talking about!
Workshop overview
Some highlights of the workshop are:
The job can make you tired – if you’re ready to act for too long without a rest, you will tire emotionally. This can happen from:
- Too many unfinished tasks
- Interruptions and frustration (particularly for complex tasks)
- Unclear tasks (you don’t really know what is expected)
- Too short a response time (eg driving too close to the car in front)
Long bad feelings make you tired too - You will learn to distinguish between emotional perceptions of your current environment (eg. feeling apprehensive while the bully is in the building – fair enough!), and self generated harmful feelings (eg. holding a grudge – you’re the only one holding it)
Lost values – this is the hard one (and it’s often the reason people put in a stress claim). If fatigue and bad feelings aren’t resolved, if management doesn’t do something real to help, people can lose faith. Their perceptions can even turn inside out, reversing their previous positive view of the workplace. They “become demoralised” (Peter Cotton’s expression), “bitter and twisted” (your grandma’s) – or are they really just seeing that the emperor has no clothes?
Background
In 1975 David Brown proposed a new model of stress, based on the brain mechanisms of attention and action. In 2002 his book “Beating Stress at Work” was published in New Zealand to explain his decades of working with stress as a psychologist and ergonomist. All participants will receive a preview copy of the new Australian edition “I Love My Job But” and it will form the core of the workshop.

Assessing and Controlling Injury Risks Associated with Manual Task
Presented By
Robin Burgess-Limerick
PhD CPE, President of HFESA
and
Margaret Cook
PhD CPE, Treasurer of HFESA
Workshop Overview
Around 30-40% of occupational injuries are associated with manual tasks. We know that assessing the risk of these tasks using a consequence-probability matrix is inadequate.
This workshop will introduce a range of risk assessment tools that can be used in the workplace: the Strain Index, Quick Exposure Check, RULA/REBA, and ManTRA. You will have the opportunity to use these during the workshop. The workshop will introduce you to a participative ergonomics approach to controlling manual tasks risks.
Date: Tuesday 5th August 2008
Venue: Next Generation Memorial Drive, Function Room
War Memorial Drive, North Adelaide
Time: 8:30 – 16:30 coffee & registration from 8:00, Lunch provided
Cost: Members $245
Non-members $295
Students (full-time) $105
About the Presenters
Associate Professor Robin Burgess-Limerick coordinates postgraduate programs in ergonomics at the University of Queensland. He has published more than 40 papers in international journals and received numerous awards for research in the area of manual tasks injury prevention. In 2006, Robin was a National Academy of Sciences (US), Senior Research Associate at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, Pittsburgh Research Laboratory. Robin also has many years experience as consultant to industry, particularly mining and rail.
Dr Margaret Cook holds fractional appointments as Senior Lecturer at both The University of Queensland and Queensland University of Technology. 44th HFESA Annual Conference - Sustainable Performance: Human Factors, Ergonomics & the Work Environment
Invitation and Call for Papers
A human-centred approach considers people first in the design of the work environment. It improves the performance of both individuals and the organisation. Sustainable work performance means sound business development and profitability. The current business context is full of stressors, demands, and pressures. The economy is booming and businesses are positively financially geared. But there are barriers to sustainable performance: threat of a slowing economy in the US, a skilled-labour shortage, community demands for family-worklife balance, a shortage of infrastructure and the ever-present government red tape! In this conference we will explore the relationship between sustainable performance and the health and safety of workers, as well the impact on the wider community. Come and join us in analysing sustainability at work in a changing workplace and changing work environment. Make your contribution. Challenge your thinking – and challenge others.
We look forward to your contributions to this conference!
